Metro Atlanta Highway Evening Peak Hour Speeds

Description

Due to the level of Congestion in Metro-Atlanta, travelers anticipate delays when traveling during peak evening hours (3 pm-7 pm).  The goal is to reduce congestion such that a 30 minute trip during non-peak hours would take no more than about 40 minutes during peak hour. Likewise, a speed of 55 mph during non-peak hours would be reduced to about 40 mph during peak hour.  To monitor our performance at addressing congestion, this measure tracks the average speed across key Metro-Atlanta highway systems during the evening peak hours of travel time.

Strategic Objective

Optimize the throughput of people and goods on network assets throughout the day. GDOT has set a peak hour target of 40 mph or better for its Interstate system.

Road to Improvement

Addressing the issue of congestion within the Atlanta region is a challenge that will require time and resources. GDOT is exploring several options to improve congestion and provide choices. HOT Lanes were implemented on the I-85 North corridor. Other options include continued Ramp Metering, operational improvements to various interchanges and additional capacity to corridors where appropriate.

Performance Measure Criteria Examples

Green: sample shows an example of Interstate traffic moving at above 45mph.

Yellow: sample shows an example of Interstate traffic moving at between 35mph and 45mph.

Red: sample shows an example of Interstate traffic moving at less than 35mph.
