The following are examples of cultural resource surveys undertaken by GDOT.
Avondale Burial Place
Location: Bibb County
Description: Through the help of area residents, GDOT Cultural Resources identified the existence and location of an abandoned African American cemetery. Specialists performed historical research in an attempt to confirm that a cemetery in fact existed and gained clues about the identities of the individuals buried within. The cemetery was named the Avondale Burial Place due to its proximity to the nearby community.
Civil War Battlefield at Jonesboro Road Widening and Rehabilitation Project
Location: City of Hampton; Clayton/Henry counties
Description: Early coordination for the Jonesboro Road Widening and Rehabilitation Project [GDOT Project STP-1583-00(012), PI 352970] identified the project location as an area containing a large number of cultural resources pertaining to the Civil War.

USS Water Witch
Location: City of Savannah
Description: Georgia DOT initiated underwater archaeological investigation in an area believed to be near the location of the sunken Civil War era USS/CSS Water Witch, lost for over 150 years. The investigation, documented with video, identified an anomaly believed to be the remains of the Water Witch.

Georgia DOT's Cultural Resources has been presented with numerous awards recognizing efforts towards the stewardship and preservation of Georgia’s cultural resources. The following awards have been granted to the Department and various partnering agencies and consultants.
2010: President’s National Environmental Excellence Award
